The Panorama of the Battle of Murten measures approximately 10 x 100 metres. The painting itself was created over a period of ten months in 1893 by Louis Braun, Germany’s most renowned painter of panoramas, and his team.
Since 1924 the painting has been in storage in Murten, being unrolled only occasionally, and never mounted. On the initiative of a foundation established in 1996, the panorama was restored and displayed in the monolith created by Jean Nouvel for the Murten Arteplage as part of the Expo.02 Swiss national exposition.
This website allows you to:
- explore the entire panorama (zoom
view)
- compare the panorama with the map of Murten (panoramic
tour)
- view certain details of the painting (as a slide
show).
- find out more about the course of the battle and the political
situation
at the time
The panorama painting itself went back into storage after the Expo. The Foundation’s aim is to make the panorama again accessible to the general public.
